Professor Niu has worked in the clinic, laboratory and classroom of interventional medicine for nearly forty years and has performed more than 35,000 interventional procedures. He treats tumours throughout the body — liver, lung, kidney, pancreas, breast, colorectal, prostate, esophageal, nasopharyngeal, uterine, gastric cardia and head and neck cancer — using both vascular and non-vascular techniques.
His non-vascular repertoire includes radiofrequency, microwave and argon-helium cryoablation, radioactive seed implantation, vertebroplasty and luminal stenting; his vascular work covers ischaemic and haemorrhagic disease at any site and interventional treatment of nervous system tumours. He performed China’s first Y-90 treatment for liver cancer, introduced uterine fibroid embolisation to the country and has run twenty-five national training courses on gynaecological intervention. He has received twenty-eight science and technology awards.
